What the cleaning code on your sofa means
Upholstered furniture often carries a cleaning code, usually on a tag under the seat cushions or on the base. The letters are an industry convention, and they decide the method before we touch the fabric.
W: water-based cleaners
The fabric can take a water-based cleaner, and solvents are out. Some makers add limits on top of the letter (one large manufacturer says hot water extraction or steam cleaning isn't recommended for its W fabrics), so we read the whole tag and still test first.
S: solvent only, no water
Only a water-free dry cleaning solvent should touch it. Water on an S fabric can leave rings or shrink it, and that damage may be permanent. We won't wet-clean an S piece, so read us the tag when you call and we'll tell you whether it's a job we can help with.
W/S: either, depending on the stain
Water-based and solvent cleaners are both allowed, and the kind of stain decides which to use. Ketchup, wine, soft drinks and most food are water-based stains. Ink, shoe polish and make-up are oil-based. Tell us what the mark is and how long it's been there, and we'll say on the call whether we can help.
X: keep liquids off it
No foam or liquid cleaner of any type. Some makers say a vacuum or a light brushing is as far as it goes, and others say professional cleaning only. We don't wet-clean X fabrics, so if that's what your tag says, we'll tell you on the call before anything is booked.
No tag, or can't read it?
When the tag has gone or the code has worn off, the test patch carries more of the decision. If we don't think a fabric will survive cleaning, we'll say so and won't clean it.
