What to do with a fresh spill
These steps match the Carpet and Rug Institute's published spot-removal advice. None of it needs anything you don't already have in the kitchen.
- Blot liquid with a dry white cloth or white paper towels. Rubbing tends to push a stain deeper into the fibres.
- Work from the outside edge of the spill in toward the centre so it doesn't spread.
- Lift semi-solids gently with a rounded spoon before you blot.
- Test any product somewhere out of sight first, and check the cloth for colour coming off.
- Go easy with liquid. Avoid overwetting and let the area dry thoroughly.
- Keep bleach away from it. Bleach damage is on the list of things nobody can remove.
- Note anything you've already tried, and tell us when you call.
Why a cleaned spot can look dirty again
The Carpet and Rug Institute points out that many spot-removal products leave residue in the carpet, and that residue attracts soil, so the same place gets dirty again. Rinsing with plain water afterwards, more than once, helps. If a spot keeps returning, mention it when you call.

A recent accident usually clears completely. When the smell hangs on or the same spot keeps getting used, urine has often spread wider under the carpet than it looks on top, and that calls for pet odour removal.
